They can't tell us the alcohol but think it's Very dark crimson. Firm and broad and very lively with real vibrant elderberry nose - there IS a bit of extra vitality in this wine! Very very nice and satisfying indeed. There is life to this and great breadth and depth.
Intense richness that seems to come from the fruit rather than from winemaking. Something of Lafite's complexity and integrity. Plus Mouton's richness. Dry finish. Very well done. But it is not a wine you want to undertake young - still lots to sort out. Much less open than most. Dense - really quite dry on the end but appetising though very long term. Date tasted 1st April Alfred Tesseron has been making classic Pauillac here every year since the excellent and recent vintages have been amongst the best ever, scoring impressively when shown in blind tastings.
Pontet Canet is now pushing the Pichons as Pauillac's top non-first growth yet we hope that the price will remain considerably lower. Grapes are manually sorted by a team of 30 people on specially made sorting tables. The vineyard is now bio-dynamic and even being worked by horses. Pontet Canet is now consistently producing wine of "super-second" quality. A powerful, explosive, dense black fruit nose. Massive and absolutely packed with ripe intense fruit on the palate.
Tons of glycerol with a hint of prunes. Huge, complex and long. Amazing richness and power with perfect structure to balance. Long, quite tannic at this stage but a long life ahead. Great potential. A real monster. One of the most experienced tasters in Bordeaux told us that this was all set for points! This gives way to a full-bodied, powerful Pauillac that carries a massive amount of sweet fruit yet stays light and beautifully balanced on the palate. Hats off to proprietor Alfred Tesseron and the team at Pontet Canet.
Maturity: - Violets and black cherries feature on the nose an attractive mix of fragrances. The fruit is ripe fleshing out the mid palate, the dark chocolate richness well balanced by red cherry freshness. There are layers of flavour all very complex. It may or may not have something to do with bio-dynamic practices in the vineyard, but this fifth growth continues to outperform its place in the classification.
Violet-scented and pure, the has a lovely freshness and elegance to it, with cedar wood, damson and black fruits on the palate. A wine that has now achieved Super Second status. Dense colour and pure Cabernet blackcurrant fruit beautifully extracted with great length and perfect harmony, great purity of expression, exuberant yet restrained, great future. Here that means manual punch downs and pump overs, with no electricity. Harvest ran from September 18 through October 4. Tasted three times. The Pontet-Canet showed progressively better on each of the three occasions I tasted it. Deep, pliant and beautifully layered in the glass, the exudes class. Dark red cherry, plum, pomegranate, licorice and rose petal infuse this super-expressive and highly nuanced wine from proprietor Alfred Tesseron and technical director Jean-Michel Comme.
Mid crimson. Weak rim. Suggestion of pencil shavings on the nose. Rather austere around the edges with oak in evidence. Chewy end and rather a lack of flesh in the middle. Sweet and spicy on the nose and sweet and quite thick on the palate. Rounded and soft but not a huge amount of fruit flavour. Very nice spice, giving a slightly exotic character. Firm, compact, fresh. Spice is the thing here and a very natural chewy texture. With air more fragrant, a floral fragrance.
Chewy, 'spicy' texture, well-balanced fruit and deeply textured. No frost so production was slightly higher than in Deep ruby in colour, with a rich, expressive nose of bramble fruits and cassis with a touch of sweet caramel and vanilla. The palate is exotic, with liquorice, baked vanilla and nutmeg, plush but rich tannins, and an overarching richness to the fruit that gives a certain oilyness to the wine. Powerful but not overworked, with great power through to the finish.
Fresh fruits on the nose fragrant the nose has lots of charm. Black cherry and blackcurrant on the palate are ripe the mid palate has rich fruit velvety, smooth and supple tannins fine. There is underlying freshness more restrained bright at the back with hints of sweetness on the finish.
This is a very charming Pauillac with texture, rippling energy and undoubted finesse. It's deceptive, because the dark, luscious blackberry, bilberry, and damson notes are fairly fresh, with a luscious lipsmacking quality, but the tannins build over the palate.
It almost tastes like a St-Julien rather than a Pauillac as they're so fine and elegant, but the Pauillac character becomes more apparent by the close of play - there's no hiding those swirling cassis, smoke and menthol notes. This has a really gorgeous tension and freshness without sacrificing concentration.
They used brand-new concrete vats this year, designed by technical director Jean-Michel Comme's, for one-third of the crop. The concrete was made from sands and gravels extracted from the exact spot that the building containing them now stands, utilising geothermal heating and cooling, with as few metallic parts as possible and insulated with hemp. They have made nearly no second wine again.
The Merlot was harvested from 18 September, block by block over 10 days, then deleafed. The Cabernets were picked from 28 September through until 4 October. Drinking Window - The yields here were ever so slightly higher than last year and there was no frost damage at all.
The nose shows some coffee and plum notes and some ripeness and richness, but this is not transferred to the palate which is more strictly controlled and focussed. There is no doubt that the nose is the star performer at the moment and it is very luscious and layered. The palate is not wanting to be disturbed but it shows deft tannins and a very crunchy finish. Alfred says that he likes to make every wine individual and this is a prime example.

Ask Dave Brailsford. When markets get really nervous, price declines give rise to uncertainty and eventually to panic. When investors are more relaxed, they see declines as a buying opportunity. The difficulty investors have is more psychological than anything, because we would all prefer markets to go up in a nice straight line, and the problem is they never do.
Ho hum. The pleasures of risk and reward. Anyway, we are now into the famous en primeur pricing phase, and it is perennially astonishing just how hard the producers seem to find all this. They have a better acquaintance of the market for their own wines than anyone else, not least because they are in a much better position to gauge how much potential supply is left in the market.
Because only they know exactly how much was released in the first place. They also have a much more intimate acquaintance with the inherent quality of their wines, for even more blindingly obvious reasons. AND they have a perfectly valid secondary market to let them know at exactly what prices the market place values all their back vintages. So how hard can all this be?
Talk about sticking a wet finger in the air!!! That, at least, is the sales pitch being made by the various distributors, and of course only they really know. This touches on a matter of great importance though, actually. Is the fine wine market, and investors within it, ready to accord Neal Martin the position it used to reserve for Robert Parker?
It is very early days, but this is something we need to be right on top of. Almost under the radar Martin has been charging around re-scoring an awful lot of Bordeaux wines, Montrose in particular, funnily enough. That is nothing compared to the Montrose At the end of February he also downgraded Pontet Canet to 98 points.
Lock up your daughters! Now it is fair to say that historically downgrades tend to have less impact than upgrades, for reasons we have not yet fathomed. But all this may change as the market matures. If the market place is quite happy with Neal Martin filling the Parker shoes, not only will former pointers not achieve further scarcity value, but they may suffer as a result of such downgrades as have already been visited upon Montrose and Pontet Canet.

Plum, integrated tannins and a good funky taste. Medium finish. Drank it against a Conn Valley Cab. Interesting comparison. The Conn Valley was cleaner and obviously pure Cab. The table was split around which they liked more. I had no winner - but I like both the styles - they are just different.
Decanted for 45 minutes, not enough time. Undergrowth and blackcurrant, plus raw power on the nose. Tannins totally took over on the palate in a very intrusive way for first minutes of drinking. I saw some other posts below about resolved tannins, definitely not the case with this bottle. After some time and a lot of swirling got classic Pauillac soil, pencil shavings, leather, cedar.
Classic Pauillac. Blackcurrant remained dominating characteristic on the palate. Bottle was lovely with a lengthy finish but not overly complex. Didn't hold a candle to the Mouton I drank last week. Just to reiterate previous note, the wine could be mistaken for something a decade older.
It is everything you would want from a fully mature old school left bank Bordeaux, with deep black fruit and old leather on the nose, with good steely tannin which has resolved. The wine shows tertiary characteristics and has a great depth and complexity on the palate. It is compted with a well balanced finish pushing 30 seconds.
First from a case bought on release. Drunk alongside the Fill just underneath the cork. Deeply coloured, no sign of maturity. Riper than the 95 more depth and smoother. Classic structure, tannins mostly resolved. Long long finish. Fully mature and delivering everything you want in mature claret. Perhaps not the best value but a very enjoyable bottle.
Tertiary, retains some fruit, very good with food in this case roast lamb. Tried side by side with the which feels much, much younger by comparison Fading or, at least, not improving. Decanted with steak. Good Pauillac dirt, but not terribly complex. Slight bitterness, and herbal. Could drink or continue to hold.
Very nice, sadly our last bottle. Medium bodied. Currant and licorice giving way to leather, cedar, pencil lead and iron. Teeth tickling tannins, fine and mostly resolved. Great balance and class. Short note off rough memory. Resolved tannin with a silkier mouthfeel than the , but I would still take the over this today, let alone with more age.
A great example of an aged Bordeaux. Leather, cigar box, forest floor, slight pencil lead and earthy black fruit. The tannins are resolved but drinking very well after pop and pour. Excellent but not a blockbuster, as the nose wasn't as expressive and the finish a little clipped. A wonderful wine experience. Enjoyed this with bistro steak roll slices with baguette, EVOO and pepper.
A great combo. The wine itself was quite nice right out of the bottle. Decanted and slowly drank the bottle over the next couple of hours. The aroma developed and changed wonderfully over that time. The primary reveal for me was a very pleasant smell of dried pine needles on a forest floor.
The taste was woodsy as well and I agree wholeheartedly with others who comment on the musty earth smell. Picked up a hint of fennel as well. I can't recommend this wine enough. Sorry I only have 1 bottle left. The nose was as old school as Bordeaux gets; barnyard, musty earth, graphite and pencil shavings. Matured Pauillac at its finest. The palate opened up over 30 minutes with first a mirroring of the aroma to show slivers of blackcurrant and plum with a main layer of licorice.
Still surprisingly tight and dry with a lively acidity. As per previous notes, this is probably the best Pontet Canet fully mature, and really punches above its weight. Everything about it is classic old style Bordeaux, with a nose full of musty leather and barnyard. The palate is full of blackcurrent and plum with good tannic balance.
Possessing layers of depth and complexity, only a rather short finish prevents a higher rating. Only a short time in the decanter is needed. From Today a 91 point wine. Still can't get past the V8 juice nose.
Kinder tasters would call this balsamic but for me, it's a fault. If you can get past the nose, this is is avery good wine. That being said, it won't improve so drink up. Run, don't walk to your cellar! Earthy, barnyard, leather, rustic. Opened up after about two hours to reveal a nice rich core. Pulled from the Eurocave and stood up for 10 minutes before using my recently updated Pungo to pour a large glass before returning the bottle to the cellar.
We'll see in a couple weeks how well the preservation pin works. First taste is filled with wonderfully vibrant and balanced dark fruits and mildly astringent on the mouthfeel. A really "youthful" '96 with plenty of more mileage left on this bottle. Will see how it tastes in a couple weeks. Pairing nicely with the chorizo, triple creme brie and truffle mousse this evening. Very pretty wine. Classic and quite fine.
There's also some nice red fruit, as well as a slight bit of leather and more woody elements. The palate shows a lot of structure and this seems to be thinning out now. Good, but probably ready to go.
A little bit of air probably helps this unfurl as well. Great bottle while watching France best Socceroos! Deep purple, powerful pauillac that got better after 1hr in the decanter. Even from a half bottle this was so young, vibrant and fresh. This totally belies its age. I have to disagree with some of the notes that say to drink now, for my tastes, this needs another decade but I acknowledge I prefer my wines in their secondary and tertiary phases.
Drink Very long, intense mature red and purple fruit, tannins on their way to resolution but not there yet. A wine for the ages, exactly what a Pauillac should taste like. This is drinking at its best with minimal time in the decanter needed. This has always been a favourite and punches above its weight in this vintage, and is only pipped by the of the Pontet Canet drinking at present. Packed full of blackberry and plum, the nose is heady. On the palate the tannin is robust but with good balance and there is great depth of fruit and an excellent finish.
I can't see the tannin further sweetening and there is no reason not to be drinking this now. Almost Graves-like nose of iodine, creosote, charred wood and black currant. Medium-bodied with outstanding saline minerality, this has a bit of black currant fruit, charred oak and spice as well. The salinity is mouth-watering and intense! Drink now Compared to the 95 drunk last week this is losing its fruit and needs drinking now.
Still a lovely wine. A complex blackcurrant, leather, graphite and smoke nose. Tannins whilst medium soft slightly overpower the fruit and this will not improve. Finish surprisingly bitter at first then good length and persistence. Same points and both clearly Pauillac - yet very different wines.
Dark and very rustic. A classic style of Bordeaux loaded with leather and earth, but fruit is a little subdued however and the finish is a little lacking. Smooth, drinking very well, and a perfectly delicious aged claret just lacking in a little brighter fruit and a more complex finish.
Leather, smoke and sweet black fruit on the nose. Cedar, leather, cassis and a touch of floral on the palate. The tannins are fully integrated but still showing some structure. A soft and lingering finish. The next few years is the time to drink these in my opinion.
An enjoyable bottle of aged Bordeaux. Decanted for a good 30 minutes and it helped. Quite bright on the fruit still, red fruited a lot more than previous occasions and of course with the textbook, tobacco and leather side. Give it another 5 years—if you must drink now give it at least hours in the decanter.
This was still drinking very youthfully with lots of fruit and some spiciness on the palate. This will clearly age for a lot longer and I would continue to hold for at least another five years, to let some of the underlying flavors develop.
Sweet attack with great balance. Tannins are smooth. Great now! Sadly my last bottle. Christmas Day with duck casserole. Perfect wine, perfect pairing. Sadly it is very over priced these days. Deep crimson with some bricking. Lovely nose of black currant, white flowers, licorice and cedar. The palate is initially a bit obdurate and old fashioned with firm tannins but with breathing over several hours the fruit became luscious and the tannins more refined.
Classic slightly old-school Pauillac. Well balanced, nice secondary notes. Missing a little punch in the mid palate and finish. Time to drink up. Another Saturday at Chevalier Mostly Blind : Tasted blind. Rich and meaty plum with good concentration and length.
Overall very good with slightly firm finish and upside from here. Attractive and layered nose with plum, horsey tones, earth, tobacco leaf and cigar ash. The fruit has great concentration. Chewy tannin. Firm finish. Drinking well now. Aromatic, room-filling red and black berry fruit. Medium body, lean, metallic, elegant and subtle, light on the palate. If this bottle is anything to go by, this wine is now in rapid decline. Clearly from a ripe vintage with tannins starting to resolve, I thought this from Accessible and nicely rich while well balanced.
Better today vs when last tasted in We chose not to decant, it didn't feel like it needed it and post the 10 minute mark was a pure class act. A touch drying out on the finish and would have loved some more fruit but this is as classic as it gets and very very good. Very elegant wine. Firmly in its drinking window, I am a great fan of this wine, and it is the only Pontet Canet to come near the quality of the Possessing a beautifully deep nose full of blackcurrant and plum, it is an old fashioned mature Bordeaux.
On the palate the wine is robust with good firm tannins with good depth and complexity, and completes with a deep and lengthy finish. Needing time in the decanter, this wine has the structure to stay here for a long time, and really can hold its head up in front of more illustrious left bankers from the year. I bought this wine en-primeur in its youth it was unapproachable but with significant bottle age it sure has mellowed and drinking beautifully. It's not a head turner just a decent glass of mature Paulillac which still has time on its side.
From I'd pretty much written this one off as over the hill after a couple of half bottles blessed with the taste of V8 Juice. Drinking at peak, but will hold on it's plateau of maturity for several years even from small format Deep Cabernet nose and a palate redolent of cabernet fruit and dark chocolate. Good acidity and enough tannic bite to provide focus. Nice finish. From a 3 liter bottle purchased upon release in Low neck fill and a spongy cork we managed to extract intact.
Obvious bricking in glass. Lovely old claret on palate. Old bones. Was the hit of the evening among a large group of wine enthusiasts. It beat out a 6 liter Montrose! Just fading and needs to be drunk even from a 3 liter bottle. No formal note; a bit disappointed by this bottle; a bit muted in the nose and still rather tight on the palate; overall, points. Medium bodied on the palate, cool black fruit, minerals again to the fore, an attractive leanness with fresh acidity and a good length lightly savoury finish.
This was crazy - opened it on the heels of a corked Calon-Segur. Wasn't sure about this one, but decanted it 4 hours and served at a dinner of NY steaks that were cooked perfectly. The wine is devoid of fruit. The nose is leather and saddle blanket. No fruit. In the mouth, very soft, a hint of cassis, a bit of alcohol heat, leather, earth. Not as subtle and ethereal as my last bottle of this. But, still pretty darn impressive. Drinking well at this stage.
See little room for improvement. Nice bottle, if nothing exceptional. Aromas of red berry fruit along with cedar and forest floor. Tannins have integrated nicely; flavors of red currant and macerated berries, with leather and green tobacco nuances. Red fruit and earth carrying through the finish. At the early stage of maturity.
Cedar, graphite, leather, complex nose and palate, classic Bordeaux red possibly at peak, but with a lot left imo. Near perfect balance, fine match with lamb shank tagine in dinner with great friends at Chez Simo, leaving me in a happy contemplative space and not just due to all the wine on offer. Despite Parker, far better to me than the drunk before it, and better than a fine Malescot-St.
From I have not rated this wine the last two times I have opened it. My case of 's often yielded a bottle with a nose and palate reminiscent of V8 juice. This bottle is drinkable, and gives me hope for my remaining 9 bottles. Tannins resolved, yielding to sweet fruit on the palate. Sightly vegetal. Perhaps a little hot on the finish. Decanted for 90 minutes before first glass.
Surprisingly fruit-forward, everything in balance but unfortunately little finesse behind it, and certainly little in the way of customary Pauillac character. If you'd have tasted this blind you could have placed as it as a mids above-average Napa Valley Cab almost a slight "thick" quality to it. Even with an hour-long drinking window, it didn't improve.
Definitely good, but ultimately underwhelming for such a renowned estate. Decanted an hour. This is concentrated, ripe and yet balanced. The fruit screams out at opening and decanting, and with some air this drinks well - but more ripe fruit than you might expect, so be ready for it. Very enjoyable, but pair well with food noting the ripe and concentrated nature of this wine. Purple color with a bouquet and flavor much more herbal than the bottle drunk in Dusty tannins that gave way to some harshness in the finish.
Perhaps a peaked bottle if not a peaked wine. Matched with wonderful pho at our favorite pho restaurant. Not cabbage and corned beef for St. Patrick's day, but a very good match for the wine. This is why you cellar old Bordeaux. The wine is at full maturity with a few more years at this level. Deep ruby. Cedar, cassis. Medium to full body. At 20 years old, this wine is finally entering adulthood.
This is why we buy and cellar fine wine. Everything you want in a Pauillac - Great nose, full bodied with the usual graphite, cedar, chocolate flavors. Lingering aftertaste. Just lovely. At nearly 68 myself and with 9 bottles left, I will try to open one per year. Hope I make it that far to see how it turns out! Leathery, smokey, beautiful nose; a bit acidic on the palate. Fully mature it overwhelms with deep blackcurrent on the nose.
Flavours of musty blackcurrent and plum on the palate balance perfectly with resolved tannins and hints of tobacco and vanilla. It completes with a perfectly balanced finish. This how a good old fashioned mature Bordeaux should be. It is at its peak of evolution and should stay here for a good few years. Cedar, tobacco, graphite.
Very true to the appelation and very good, very elegant. Can wait longer though. Beautiful red fruit, great tannins, has tremendous structure and grip. I believe there will be many years of aging left for this bottle. Dried florals here. Spices and leathers. Also a tannic palate with red cedar. Some cigar box in here too.
Good finish. It has been five and a half years since I last had the pleasure of this wine, and the wine is very much the same. Slightly softer. It is a beautiful example of Paulliac with its Old World austere character - the nose is gorgeous, all earth, leather and cigar box. A bit of cassis but not much. The flavors are consistent - the only fruit is black, edging toward cassis.
Extremely masculine - predominantly leather and earth. Tannins are entirely integrated, the wine is surprisingly soft for as masculine as it is. The finish is moderate and entirely pleasant. This is why good Bordeaux should be held in the cellar for years and years. Wonderfully balanced, mature Bordo, tobacco, saddle leather, dark stone fruit, sharp cigar box aromas. Tannin is softer, round, made me think fat vintage. Not a lot of Cab notes, so I thought it could be Right Bank.
Still youthful fruit, but as noted tannins are very soft so it's quite drinkable. Very nice bottle again. Didn't hit me quite the same as last tasting recently but still really beautiful mature bdx wine. I think range is right for this one. Hitting really well right now. Best after an hour decant. Lots and lots of life yet. Needed a little time to open up, but when it did it was lovely. Lush fruits,Black currant, black cherry, licorice, minerality.
Very nice texture. At 20 years old hitting a great window, still has plenty of stuffing left. Backward is the new forward. The currant, both black and blue along with concentrated blackberry and cherry give this wine of twenty years all the fruit presence one could ask for, but also provides the classic structure, sweet forest smoke and floor, saddle leather, and rich spices with cloves leading the charge. The aged yet fresh mouthfeel and the ripe and balanced tannins are fully integrated and make this glory a testament as why one collects wine and tries to wait to drink until wines are mature.
Still has deep garnet color and only a little bricking. Tannins soft and integrated. Just black currants, earthiness, and meatiness with a smooth finish. Fully mature yet will be great for years. Evolving verrry slowly. I would say hold for at least 10, probably 15 or more though. The structure is terrific. The nose offers pencil shavings, asian spice, wood, some secondary development. Not a lot of fruit. On the palate, the underlying notes are obscured by the overwhelming structure.
Inaccessible on night one. On night two, with food pairing, this was a bit more expressive, showing the potential that it holds. Could become a very good wine but needs a lot more time. Men det saknar komplexitet och djup. In the first taste after opening the bottle, it had a mix of a little too high acidity and bitterness. Decanted for 4 hours. The oxidation helped to melt the acidity and bitterness and some tertiary aroma's like leather, animal skin were noticeably present.
Also still some forest floor and a slight evolved red fruit mix. Colour was evolved showing brownish edge. Not the best year for P-C, but an enjoyable wine which needs aeration and should be drunk now. Pretty ordinary bottle. Good structure, to be sure. The mid-palate is either thin or obscured, at least in this bottle. The tannin just absolutely clamps down on the finish. The color is quite dark still.
Only one bottle left -- how long to wait to open is the question. My gut tells me patience is the best bet. Lots of patience. During a Left Bank tasting dinner. From Magnum. Dark ruby. Discrete nose of some wood, oak, earth, missing complexity. Enters the palate medium bodied but the tannins are a bit dry. Short finish.
Somehow there are just too. This was the weaknesses in this wine tonight to be a noteworthy Medoc Grand Cru. Initial acetone and pungent mashed olives nose burns off with time in the decanter. Spices, green olives, leather. Long dry mouth feel. Closed and greener than previous bottles. Poor example of a very good wine.
Still a nice ruby red color. Soft, complex and balanced on the palate with a nice long finish. Still at it's best. Will not wait too long to drink my other and sadly last bottle. Simply superb! Great fruit and complexity. It is incredible to think that this wine is 20 years old. No signs of aging yet. Drink now or cellar for another decade.
First of four bottles - consumed with pork-chops, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Bottle and level in pristine condition - cork came out with any issues. Very nice nose, lots of pepper, spices and dark fruits Very smooth going through the mouth, again some spices and dark fruits Great flavour, lingers in your mouth medium time, still dry at the end Amazing to believe this is already 20 years old - surely must have more life in it.
Drink now but decant or keep cellared for a few more years - up to you. This wine has not changed a lot the last years. It took 2 hrs of air before it opened up a bit and showed a beguiling nose of fragrant Pauillac-mix with cedar, tobacco, almonds and herbs.
Sweet fruits in the palate show up after a while. Then very harsh and brutal tannins in the finish. Not the sweet and lush style of PC-vintages after , more classical, elegant and polished. Great winemaking and terroir, but this wine still needs lots of time, if you like your Bdx in the best drinking window: All tanins are now resolved and this wine is drinking superbly.
Fabulous earthy nose of mushroom, soy, iron, leather; complex palate of black fruits with a wonderful meaty quality. Thoroughly compelling. Audouzed in the cellar for 12 hours. Throws a fair amount of sediment, so stand it up a few days before serving. Full bodied with a lovely deep color.
Black cherry flavors predominate, with an underlying mineral streak. Tannins were quite smooth after extended air. Acid balance was excellent, and finish was very good. This brawny yet classy wine seems like an excellent pairing for steak. Colour is very dark. Nose is very good and aromatic. Very fruity and young even after nearly 20 years.
Good bottle of wine to drink with meat. Expect another 5 years before full maturity. Dark ruby, all Bordeaux nose with pencil shavings, graphite, blackcurrant with touches of bacon fat and saddle leather, lean on the attack with red and black fruit, black olives, mint and well integrated chalky tannins, finishes long and deep with tones of earth, spice, mocha, licorice, black tea, seashell and on and on. Classic Paullac Nose, wild leather, dreid tomatoes and a touch of barnyard, Velvety red with no signs of tiring.
Medium bodied, red currant, leather, Tabak, forest, lacking a bit of fruit, but never the less drinking beautifully just now. I would drink this up over the next two or three years, will not get better. A bit of barnyard on the nose obscures dark red berries. The palate followed the nose with a smoky note and some tobacco.
Resolved tannins and a long, graceful finish. Crimson in the glass. Aged leather, smoke, cedar and dark red berries with a hint of plum on the nose. The palate hits with leather and a hint of forest floor. The tannins are surprisingly pronounced for almost 20 years in the bottle. Still screams Pauillac. It lacks the fruity elixir like quality of more current PC vintages but still a brilliant wine that is a pleasure to drink.
This could go a little further in the next few years but I dare say this is prime time to drink. Excellent showing More recent versions and vintages perhaps riper and a little fuller but this was very good. Andouzed for several hours then decanted for one. Nice balance of primary and secondary aromas really screamed Pauillac to me.
Medium bodied for a '96, it drank beautifully and elegantly for hours. Smooth as silk. Typical nose with massive amounts of graphite and cedar. Blackberry notes, with quite a green tinge but not so pronounced as to ruin the wine. Solid performer, still has some years to age gracefully but probably at its plateau. Elegant structure with fougere and massage oils in the spaces.
Plenty of dark fruits. Finished off with humus and a long dry down of soft textures and preserves and more fougere interplayed. Kraftig Bordeaux. Trenger timer i karaffel. Litt voldsomt med tanniner. Synes alkoholen er litt fremtredende. Hadde forventet litt mer av denne. Kanskje den drikkes for tidlig? Beautiful Wine decanted for 2. The Nose had wonderful Creme d'Casis and earth minerals. The tastes was spice box with red current fruit.
Passion fruit with Carmel. The taste was sublime. I think this wine is great and will only get better over the next yrs. Second time drinking this, but the previous bottle consumed 2 years ago was better. It took one hour plus in the decanter to open up the wine. The nose initially was very tight with only black currants.
After an hour in the glass, vanilla, cassis, soil, tobacco and leather emerged nicely in the nose. The palate was classic with black fruit, plum, iodine and earth Nose was nicer than the palate. Drink now with a 90 mins decant. Brick rim with ruby core. Classic warm, earthy Bordeaux nose. Medium body with excellent flavor penetration. Surprisingly elegant though lacks a bit on the finish. Acid is not at all overbearing.
Excellent and ready to go. Green pepper aroma, Green pepper and spicy taste with well present tannins. I enjoy this wine. Where were you, guys? Solid garnet. Great aromas right out of the gate and improved with a minute decant: black currant cassis , forest floor, mineral, medium toast, vanilla, clove, tobacco, meaty and tar.
Big but approachable tannin, lots of fruit left. Last bottle of three and the best example of the wine by far. Had been closed and vegetal in the past. Ex chateau bottle. It has very obvious cab Sauv flavours. Oak very present still.
Rather clunky in my view. No real fruit on the nose. Tannins not obvious on the palate. Quite clean and not too heavy on finish. The oak started to disappear with about 3 hrs in a decanter. Wine became much more balanced, with some nice fruits starting to show.
We joined our neighbours for an elegant end of summer dinner at their house. Food was fantabulous and wine wonderful. The WOTN!!! It was considered by all to be better than the Ch. Mouton Rothschild of the same vintage. Dark, red purple with a slight brownish rim. Liquorice, coffee, chocolate and leather on the nose Outstanding dark fruits, well-integrated oak and elegant tannins.
Nearly perfect on the palate and just might improve a bit in the coming years. A statuesque, long, lingering finish. Very definitely impressive! Very smooth and more approachable than 3 years ago. These are finally opening up and the tannins were much softer, albeit still there!
Nice acidity from the vintage, coupled with mature cab. Great with food, not overly complex, just very nice mature wine! Fantastic bottle. I opened the bottle and tasted after an hour. I then decanted and it took another 2 hours to really open up. If you are drinking this now I would give it a good 3 hour decant.
This is my best bottle of the 96 yet. Unfortunately I only have 4 left. Dark red and just starting to brown on the edge. Really nice red fruit with cassis and stone on the nose. Sour red cherry and some graphite with some fine tannins. I think this has many years ahead but drinking nicely now.
Raspberries on the nose, leather with hints of graphite. Sweet, delicate red fruit on the palate. Fine tannins. Well balanced, medium bodied. Graphite and cedar in the background. Starting to develop secondary flavours. Much evolved however still not spectacular but very good.
It's an elegant wine, as previous notes mentioned definitely a cigar box, wood. Very kind of John to share. Not sure about this bottle. There are loads of pencil and cigar box flavors, still a little tannic, but no fruit to speak of. Brisket, Bordeaux, and Rhones : It seems to be evolving slowly and is still very tight and rustic, and the comparison to some of the other wines tasted with it didn't do it any favors.
Drinking perfectly. Went wonderfully with bbq'd steak. A very fine Bordeaux exhibiting lots of secondary flavours. Decanted half hour before drinking. Still has lots of fruit and tannins have softened since last drank. Better than the last bottle 2 months ago.
Sadly, my last one. Loads of finesse. Tight, ungdommelig og frisk. Fin kompleksitet med flere lag. Much better than the 95, dark fruit nose, some earthiness, liquorice. Still very tannic, needs time to mellow out. Good fruit on the palate, some greeness. Long finish, nice! Quite classic profile, lots of graphite, dried currants, some pencil shaving and gravel, similar palate with hint of smoke and which is in a great spot right now, medium acidity with a complex finish.
A private dinner at home : About as classical as claret gets, but very much on the gravelly side of the spectrum. I get the impression this may be developing in the direction that many 's have taken. Very terroir driven, but perhaps without the fruit to back it up? Coravined two small glasses. Nearing readiness although a couple of more years won't hurt. Same with the palate.
Typical bit of aspirin-like astringency on the end. Best with medium cheese or flavorful meals. Medium-full ruby color turning crimson at the rim with a transparent edge. The nose is very aromatic with notes of dried red and black fruits, toasted vanilla, toffee, sweet cedar. The palate is dry, medium-to-full bodied with an ultra silky texture.
Flavors of black currant, smoke, meat, graphite, and earth form the core. Slightly hollows out on the end mid palate but recovers its momentum on the finish with a long streak of silky tannins. This is very well-balance, delicate and elegant. Drink now. Tasted blind. Notes of cedar, blackcurrant and tobacco. Very balanced, medium bodied wine.
Hints of leather and plums. Very nice. Double decanted, put the genie back in the bottle, and when it came back, granted all our wine wishes. Well into its drinking time, well integrated, classic, smooth, cedars, leathers, woodland, a little chocolate and on and on. Not sure all that matters as much as the sum being oh so much more.
A beaut. Note to self. Leave a few. Classic left bank nose. Pure core of dark fruits with leather, cedar lead pencil and minerals and a long finish - Great wine, drinking well 93 points. Spectacular nose, classic pauillac on the palate. Finish not too long. Drinking very nicely but ahould last Cedar notes with dark berries and some barnyard on the nose. Cassis and again dark berries on the palate. A bitter note on the aftertaste that faded after 30 minutes and as the fruit opened up and the wine rounded nicely.
Tannins integrated beautifully, good acidity for a decent backbone and smooth texture.
