It has been particularly challenging to g married with the knowledge that the only way to have healthy children is do IVF with PGD and to do the treatments. When I met with Chany I was struck by the refinement and softness of her speech. But behind the soft speech is a woman of steely resolve and unshakeable courage. Mind Over Matter Have no doubt. Many obstacles have arisen along the way. At other times it can be changed by a single message in a life altering moment. What would he say? I had heard it all. But amazingly he was able to understand my deepest emotions and help me see things in a different light.

This approach enabled me to get hold of my emotions. I was then able to enjoy myself and dance and celebrate with a full heart. I kept telling myself that Hashem gives me enough.

I have what I need. It is because of this deep feeling of hashgacha in her life that, in spite of it all, she has never gotten to the point of real despair. One Shavous night, I went out on my porch after candle lighting. From my porch I had a clear view of the streets below.

I was immediately comforted. This seemed to me to be a direct message from Hashem. Instead of despairing I felt full of hope. Besides the pressure of getting together with family and all that it entails, there is also another strain. Being in the position of always giving, while not receiving back can be a drain on emotions as well as finances.

But Chany says this is because we often have the wrong attitude towards giving. When we searched the basement we found that over Sukkos she had gotten in while the door must have been open and given birth to kittens. She sent us to buy cat food. When we returned with twelve cans of the same food she was upset- even a cat needs variety! A child will always be happy with a piece of candy. She uses a variety of approaches, from davening to humor to seeking inspiration. I have many meaningful activities.

I give shiurim, am involved in teaching, and have written a book as well. I often think of the things I can do because I have time available to me. This is not to minimize the pain of infertility. But make no mistake. As hard as it is, the key is to keep trying to rise above. The infertility issue often overshadows the underlying problem. Make sure to take care of all your medical needs.

It is true that the winter brings chilly temperatures and we miss that intense spiritual warmth, but we have an opportunity to ignite a spark to help us through - the light of Chanukah! In the very beginning of time the Al-mighty created light. This ohr was not the type of light we have today, rather it was a mystical light. After Adam sinned Hashem saw that the world would no longer be able to appreciate this light, so He hid it, and thus it is called the ohr haganuz. We can certainly understand this concept but as we are curious creatures, we wonder — where did Hashem hide this beautiful spiritual light?

Like any journey, sometimes we feel lost and as though it will never end — but we persevere and then perceive that extraordinary light. Our journey through the year is analogous to our journey through our own personal lives. The seasons of the year enter a dark and cold spell where we struggle to find light and warmth - but as long as we persist in our journey we will discover the warmth. So too, our neshamos might feel detached from the varmkeit and lichtegkeit of Torah and Mitzvos.

If we endure, though, we will find the warmth. If we would add up all the lights that are kindled on Chanukah we would discover that there are 36 in all. These 36 lights are reminiscent of the 36 hours that the ohr haganuz was present in this world. It is also evocative of the 36 hidden tzaddikim in this world. This may be alluded to in the name Kislev, the month in which Chanukah falls. Kis is a pocket- a place where we hide something. Lamed vav is the number Just as there are 36 tzaddikim hidden inside the world, so too, veiled within this month is the ability to discover the hidden tzaddik concealed deep within each and every one of our neshamos.

The meaning of this might be that even if the Yom Tov of Chanukah has passed us by we must not despair. In fact the gematria of Teves is , one more than the years in which the Beis Hamikdash existed, teaching us the aforementioned lesson. Older talmidim were scattered in vari- ous locales. Wherever they were, the reaction was the same. They began to shed copious tears, in a stream of. I have unfortunately been to many a levaya of a talmid chacham, but I do not recall seeing such an out- pouring of genuine, raw grief from young talmidim.

To what can this be attributed? The truth is that Rav Zalmon was an ish haeshkolos, a multifaceted gadol baTorah who kept much of his greatness hidden. It is the relationship to his talmidim, the work he accom- plished with his young charges, that is. He was American, but his values and essence were European. His parents imbued him with old-fashioned val- ues of fierce loyalty to Torah and Halacha.

The talmi- dim that Rav Zalmon later taught were seemingly light years away from Europe. But he bridged the gap from the Old World to the New, transmit- ting not only mehalchim in sugyos but a palpable sense of ahavas haTorah to. Many of these talmidim were from affluent neighborhoods. Rav Zalmon was a member of a distinguished chaburah of illustrious and devoted maggidei shiur at the Yeshiva, may they live and be well until But the shiurim he delivered took place in the afternoon rather than the morning, and they were for a select group of Mesivta bachurim who had sufficiently advanced in their gen- eral studies syllabus to allow for a few periods of advanced Gemara learning.

When Rav Zalmon dissected a sugya, he was aflame. It was kinisinos- son miSinai. He worked tirelessly with his bachurim to bring them to the next level of learning, to enable them to see the Gemara and mefarshim with a sharper, more mature perspec- tive and to polish their skills as lam- danim. The clarity of his approach was remarkable. He did not let the bachurim jump to peruse the explana- tions of the Acharonim — he wanted them to learn how to understand each Gemara, Rashi, Tosafos and Rishon in a straightforward, glatteh way, and to ultimately arrive at the underlying pshat in each sugya.

The chazara for each lasted weeks. At the legendary shiur. He would often telephone a parent to effusively share the nachas of a stellar test result. In his shiur the bachurim got a true taste of the sublime sweetness of Torah, as they dug beneath the surface of each sugya together and absorbed his infec- tious enthusiasm for finding the emes. He pushed them to reach beyond their comfort zones, to toil and think and analyze and review until they attained the true pshat.

He did not let them rest on their laurels — because he cared too deeply about them. Before he left the room where he prepared his shiurim he would turn to his colleague Rav Leibish Langer, and ask him for a bracha to be successful in giving over the shiur. Such was his concern for his talmidim that he did not rely on his razor-sharp mind or on his hours of intense preparation.

He sought as much Siyata diShmaya as he could possibly muster in this most sacred of tasks that was before him. But there was something tran- scendent about Rav Zalmon that truly forged his bond with his talmidim. It was the dmus, the live picture of aha-. But his was not a cold, anxious adherence to Halacha. He lived every mitzvah with joy.

He slept little at night and spent nearly every waking moment learning and teaching. Talmidim were zocheh to see this and grow from this. When they joined his seudah on Purim, they saw that it was not a day for frivolity but a day for true joy, for growth in ruchniyus.

I would like to write a personal experience story. My husband and I have a genic problem we were aware of before we got married. It is a singular genic problem meaning that genically, we are not a compatible match. It has been particularly challenging to g married with the knowledge that the only way to have healthy children is do IVF with PGD and to do the treatments.

As I journey along the way, I hope to write about my experience, hoping that it will help others o may find themselv in a similar situation. The Rosh Hashana iue had many wonderful articl. Young people are urged to join support groups and participate in lovely, elegant, creative events in a secure, accepting environment.

Because of her unique experiences and outlook, Chany is often approached for advice about this sensitive topic. Sometimes they ask me if they should broach the topic of infertility with children who are married for a while. I tell them they are lucky mothers.

They can rest assured that organizations like A TIME are there to help their children with proper advice and support and therefore they need not initiate a discussion that can be very painful. Even after all these years, attending such functions in public is hard for me. The shame resurfaces. Years of effort were necessary. Chany Fishman. During the course of our conversation I traveled through the ever changing landscape of the heart and mind of a woman who has a deep and sensitive soul, and a compelling message to convey.

When I met with Chany I was struck by the refinement and softness of her speech. But behind the soft speech is a woman of steely resolve and unshakeable courage. She is a soldier of the General, and is determined to see her mission through whatever the outcome, no matter what obstacles arise in her path. Mind Over Matter Have no doubt. Many obstacles have arisen along the way. At other times it can be changed by a single message in a life altering moment. What would he say? I had heard it all. But amazingly he was able to understand my deepest emotions and help me see things in a different light.

Rabbi Tauber explained that Hashem built the ability to reproduce into all creation from humans to animals and plants. He chooses us especially and is so to say, asking- What will I get from this person out of this experience? What will you do for My sake?

So much pain evaporated. From this moment I left feeling that it was no longer a nisoyan. Then we need to find new sources of inspiration. I have so many gifts in life. I have relatives, a wonderful husband, talents and abilities, etc.

The antidote that works well for me is to only look at my own plate. So I tell myself that I can create my own little island. I see, but I try not to look at others. We got married three weeks apart, had shopped together then and had even shared the same headpiece. I had been on the verge of tears. This approach enabled me to get hold of my emotions. I was then able to enjoy myself and dance and celebrate with a full heart.

I kept telling myself that Hashem gives me enough. I have what I need. It is because of this deep feeling of hashgacha in her life that, in spite of it all, she has never gotten to the point of real despair. One Shavous night, I went out on my porch after candle lighting. From my porch I had a clear view of the streets below. Children were everywhere, dressed in their Yom Tov best. The pain was so great that I broke down in tears, davening as I cried that Hashem forgive me for crying on Yom Tov.

Shortly after, my husband came home from shul. He excitedly told me that someone had informed him that there was a nest on his porch and he should come right away to do shiluach hakan, a segula for children. I was immediately comforted. This seemed to me to be a direct message from Hashem. Instead of despairing I felt full of hope. Besides the pressure of getting together with family and all that it entails, there is also another strain.

Being in the position of always giving, while not receiving back can be a drain on emotions as well as finances. But Chany says this is because we often have the wrong attitude towards giving. When we searched the basement we found that over Sukkos she had gotten in while the door must have been open and given birth to kittens.

She sent us to buy cat food. When we returned with twelve cans of the same food she was upset- even a cat needs variety! A child will always be happy with a piece of candy. She uses a variety of approaches, from davening to humor to seeking inspiration. I have many meaningful activities.

I give shiurim, am involved in teaching, and have written a book as well. I often think of the things I can do because I have time available to me. This is not to minimize the pain of infertility. But make no mistake. As hard as it is, the key is to keep trying to rise above. The infertility issue often overshadows the underlying problem. Make sure to take care of all your medical needs.

The two children she and her husband adopted literally came to them. But the child you yearned for so deeply may come to you in the form of a ten year old who needs parents. But more than wanting to be a mother, I want my husband to be a father. I want to have a child to be mikadesh shem shamayim.

When the doctors tell me their pessimistic views I try to ignore them. The journey is not an easy one. The weather has been beautiful and the days have been filled with a sense of closeness and warmth. We have experienced a close bond with Hashem and now, unfortunately we are leaving that state and we may feel uncertain and anxious.

What will this long winter bring? Will we experience joy and happiness? Will we be able to maintain that closeness that we felt during the days of Sukkos? It is true that the winter brings chilly temperatures and we miss that intense spiritual warmth, but we have an opportunity to ignite a spark to help us through - the light of Chanukah! In the very beginning of time the Al-mighty created light.

This ohr was not the type of light we have today, rather it was a mystical light. After Adam sinned Hashem saw that the world would no longer be able to appreciate this light, so He hid it, and thus it is called the ohr haganuz. We can certainly understand this concept but as we are curious creatures, we wonder — where did Hashem hide this beautiful spiritual light?

Like any journey, sometimes we feel lost and as though it will never end — but we persevere and then perceive that extraordinary light. Our journey through the year is analogous to our journey through our own personal lives. The seasons of the year enter a dark and cold spell where we struggle to find light and warmth - but as long as we persist in our journey we will discover the warmth.

So too, our neshamos might feel detached from the varmkeit and lichtegkeit of Torah and Mitzvos. If we endure, though, we will find the warmth. If we would add up all the lights that are kindled on Chanukah we would discover that there are 36 in all. These 36 lights are reminiscent of the 36 hours that the ohr haganuz was present in this world. It is also evocative of the 36 hidden tzaddikim in this world. This may be alluded to in the name Kislev, the month in which Chanukah falls.

Kis is a pocket- a place where we hide something. Lamed vav is the number Just as there are 36 tzaddikim hidden inside the world, so too, veiled within this month is the ability to discover the hidden tzaddik concealed deep within each and every one of our neshamos. The meaning of this might be that even if the Yom Tov of Chanukah has passed us by we must not despair. In fact the gematria of Teves is , one more than the years in which the Beis Hamikdash existed, teaching us the aforementioned lesson.

Although we might be brooding in the ashes of destruction we must immediately try to begin anew to rekindle that light once more. One final thought. Interestingly, seventy-four is the number of the word Eid. The Ayin and dalet are the letters which are the bookends of the phrase Shema Yisroel These two letters are enlarged to let us know that we must bear witness to the fact the Hashem is One.

How appropriate then is the number 74? When our clarity and belief in both the Al-mighty and our own connection to Him is clouded, we must always know that the glowing lights of Chanukah are still radiating brilliantly. It might seem dark and hopeless, as if we are trapped in the middle of the tunnel.

But hold on. Be strong. For the light at the end of the tunnel is right there inside your pocket! Ah lichtegin Chanukah! Just Like the Angels By: Y. Roitenberg D espite the humidity and oppressive heat, the long main road — Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak was overcrowded with throngs of men, women and children.

Rooftops, bus stops, windows and balconies were packed with excited celebrants. Shopkeepers had closed their stores earlier than usual, young boys holding flags had been had been dismissed from Cheder early that evening and kollel men had interrupted their usual intense learning schedules to be part of this scene. This took place seven years ago in the month of Elul. There was neither a Chuppa nor any torch lights as this was not the celebration of a hachnasos sefer torah.

We were not dressed in Shabbos finery and obviously had not gathered to meet a Gadol Hador. What was it then that had prompted women and children to leave their homes at this usually hectic hour? Why had so many people either closed their businesses or left the Beis Hamedrash?

The excited masses of people had come out together to salute and cheer the heroes of this victory parade. And who exactly were the victorious heroes? The year was It had been a Shmittah year and the heroes were thousands of Shmittah observant farmers. Tractors and combine-harvesters driven by sun-tanned farmers as well as farmers on horse drawn wagons that were filled with scythes and other agriculture equipment all made their way down Rechov Chazon Ish. These simple men had attained greatness and as we waved cheered and clapped to the music, they shook hands with the men and children.

They smiled proudly to the crowds who were applauding their courage, belief and steadfastness. They had kept Shmittah meticulously day after day, week after week, month after month, letting their fields, vineyards and lands lie infertile and fallow. Tehillim ;20 The very same verse that describes angels describes Shmittah observers.

For they, with their constant unswerving faith, belief and trust, have reached the heights attained by angels. Any produce that grows during Shmittah must be used correctly and has special halachos as the fruits of the Shmittah year have special kedusha. Couples who spend years in preparation and prayer and who are finally blessed, their fruits, their children have an extra kedusha. For those who are chosen by Hashem to remain childless they too can have fruits, spirituality, eternity and holiness just like the Chazon Ish.

If the verse describing angels applies to Shmittah observant farmers because they endure days, weeks and months of challenge, then surely it can apply to us too who undergo and endure not merely weeks and months but even years of trial and challenge. Before the procession began, these heroic farmers attended a dinner where they had been addressed and praised by Rabbanim and Gedolim. These same Torah leaders had instructed us to leave our homes, schools, Shuls, Yeshivos and workplaces in honor of these great angel-like farmers who had left their own fields for an entire year, relying solely on Hashem for their needs and livelihood.

While the smiling crowds cheered and as men danced around the farmers, I felt tears spring to my eyes. While I rejoiced with everyone, tears trickled down my cheeks. I found myself comparing their great challenge — Shmittah and their infertile land, with our own trials of infertility. Can I express such joy in the face of challenge? First and foremost I thought of the Chazon Ish, as we stood there on the road that is named after this great Tzaddik.

He was a man who worked tirelessly with superhuman effort to reinstate Shmittah observance after years of neglect. The Chazon Ish, a giant in Torah, who never merited to have children, a man who tasted the bitterness of infertility, spent his life encouraging farmers to leave their fertile farmland, trees and vineyards, allowing them to lie fallow.

Torah umitzvos heim ikur toldoseihen shel tzadikim.. The Chazon Ish never had children but today years later we are still celebrating the fruits of his labor. These farmers, each and every one a success story — they are his children! Modern science has proven that leaving fields fallow for a while improves and restores the nutrients and minerals in the ground. I know that Hashem Himself who has commanded that land must be left barren has also decreed for us to experience infertility.

However, while we struggle with the pain of childlessness, at the very same time, just like fallow land improves, to too we must improve. We must maintain and develop an even greater belief and trust in Hashem. These farmers, some who never had a formal Jewish education, suddenly find themselves joining a Torah learning program and thereby making great strides in Yiddishkeit. I have heard that some farmers proclaim, that in terms of spiritual growth, Shmittah is their most fruitful, productive and profitable year.

During the Shmittah year, although farmers cannot fertilize, sow, or plant on their land, they do have fruit producing trees. At times they go out to their fields with their workers and incur expenses but no profits. They pick and package fruit that they then distribute at no cost. There at the parade I saw their jubilant smiles and I knew how happily they had done this.

I thought of our own tribulations, the medical expenses, the high cost of medications and treatments and unfortunately for some, no profits and no fruits as of yet. I understand just why these farmers are compared to angels. Not only must we appreciate them, we must also try to learn from them. Farmers admit that it becomes so obvious to them that their sustenance comes from Hashem. The seventh year helps them to realize that also during the six years when they may till the land, plow, plant and irrigate it is only Hashem who provides for them.

When I think of our child-blessed family and friends I am certain that because Hashem has left some couples childless they are all the more aware of the great gifts with which they have been blessed. The Hebrew word for victory is nitzachon, from the word netzach, which means eternity. The reason for this is when one prevails and is victorious in overcoming challenge then one earns eternity. The farmers who remain steadfast in their belief for days, weeks and months are given the title Giborei Koach.

The verse uses a double expression of strength because of the tremendous strength of character and willpower that is required to observe Shmittah. We should never let ourselves be deluded into thinking that we really own and have full control over anything. We too in a similar manner learn that we have to rely totally on Hashem and that it is He who has full control.

Were you involved in trying to have children? We will have fruits to show. Besides our efforts in trying to have children, we must ensure that we have other spiritual fruits. While we may not reproduce or procreate we certainly can still be productive and creative.

Now we are once again in the midst of a Shmittah year. Then we too will be likened to angels and worthy of the title Giborei Koach — victorious heroes. The Malachim themselves will come out to greet us as we dance our own victory parade. We will be able to smile proudly when we show Hashem the fruits of our labor. He will take pride and will announce to His Malachim — chazu banei chavevei — See My beloved children.

He in turn will show us our fruits, the rewards He has saved for us in the next world. May we be zoche that the berachos in the Musaf of Yom Kippur come to fruition. Yehi ratzon….. The third well was dug without a fight and was thus called Rechovos signifying that Hashem has given us broadness and we can be fruitful in the land. Finally, a little later on a fourth well was discovered which he called Shivah. There is obviously a profound lesson to be learned here. The Baal Haturim comments that the four wells represent the four exiles.

The first well is referring to Bavel, the second to Maddai, the third to Yavan and the fourth to Edom. However, by Rechovos the third well, he does not point to a Biblical reference. Rather, he alludes to a fascinating Midrash: During the era that the Greeks controlled Eretz Yisroel, their rulers imposed harsh decrees against the Jews in the hope that the Jews would surrender their faith in Hashem. The first decree forbade the Jews from having a bolt on the doors of their homes unless they would etch a renouncement of Hashem into the bolt.

In defiance, the Jews removed the doors of their houses. For three years they lived in this manner, without any vestige of privacy, and without any protection from the Greek conquerors who would invade their homes at their slightest whim. Nevertheless, you will benefit from the decree. The Greeks realized that their plans had been thwarted. They subsequently enacted that Jewish woman would not be allowed to immerse in a mikvah.

Without any other recourse, the Jews separated from their wives. The Greeks then said that if the Jewish woman were not married they would be assigned gentile husbands. When he presented the situation to these unscrupulous fellows, they began laughing at him.

The gabbai tzedokoh only thought about his shame while he was in the midst of the ordeal. In hindsight, he had earned himself the rare merit of staying intact even after death. The Tzlach quotes a contemporary of his who explains that in this world there is a concept of news that appears to be bad. In olam haba we will understand why all the mishaps that we lived through were really for our benefit and were really good news. May we be zoche to see this come to fruition soon!

Nonetheless, as long as the roaring breakers rise in the sea, they do their duty, obediently raising havoc and storm. But how would it look if, after Purim, I were to remain tipsy?

For that I am indeed laudable. I am fully cognizant of the fact that in a few hours everything will come to an abrupt end. Pretty soon the wine will cease to have an effect on me, and all revelries will be brought to a close. But until then, until the very last moment, I will continue to celebrate, ardently and wholeheartedly. Is this not, in fact, a parable for all of life?

What kind of special kindnesses have I been able to volunteer for?

My life may not be as clearly defined as a mother's life, but there are certainly important jobs for me to accomplish, and I was given the added task of discovering them. My sister-inlaw coos, talks and giggles to her precious baby while she pushes him in the stroller. She beams with gratification at her son's glowing, sunny smile. Every now and then she pauses to offer him another toy, readjust his seat or fix his blanket.

How much closer to God have I grown over this period? How many extra times do I think of God during a typical day because of what I lack?

But I know that I am not. I walk with my head upright and my shoulders straight as I joyfully push my own invisible stroller. My stroller is filled with all those cherished prayers and precious good deeds that I have accrued, as well as the painful feelings I have overcome.

My stroller is weighted down by all those challenges that still face me, the trying emotions that still gnaw at my nerves and the vital acts of kindness that are still calling me. As I walk, I beam at accomplishments I have brought to the world, while I lovingly tend to those challenges that still face me.

I continue to pray and beg God to allow me the opportunity to fulfill the unique role of being a mother. And when that happens I will ask God, "Please envelope the physical stroller I will push into the spiritual stroller that I have so painstakingly created. Young people are urged to join support groups and participate in lovely, elegant, creative events in a secure, accepting environment. Because of her unique experiences and outlook, Chany is often approached for advice about this sensitive topic. Sometimes they ask me if they should broach the topic of infertility with children who are married for a while. I tell them they are lucky mothers. Even after all these years, attending such functions in public is hard for me. The shame resurfaces. Years of effort were necessary. Chany Fishman. When I met with Chany I was struck by the refinement and softness of her speech. But behind the soft speech is a woman of steely resolve and unshakeable courage. Many obstacles have arisen along the way. At other times it can be changed by a single message in a life altering moment. What would he say? I had heard it all. I see, but I try not to look at others.

We got married three weeks apart, had shopped together then and had even shared the same headpiece. I had been on the verge of tears. This approach enabled me to get hold of my emotions. I was then able to enjoy myself and dance and celebrate with a full heart. I kept telling myself that Hashem gives me enough. I have what I need. It is because of this deep feeling of hashgacha in her life that, in spite of it all, she has never gotten to the point of real despair.

One Shavous night, I went out on my porch after candle lighting. From my porch I had a clear view of the streets below. Children were everywhere, dressed in their Yom Tov best. The pain was so great that I broke down in tears, davening as I cried that Hashem forgive me for crying on Yom Tov. Shortly after, my husband came home from shul. He excitedly told me that someone had informed him that there was a nest on his porch and he should come right away to do shiluach hakan, a segula for children.

I was immediately comforted. This seemed to me to be a direct message from Hashem. Instead of despairing I felt full of hope. Besides the pressure of getting together with family and all that it entails, there is also another strain. Being in the position of always giving, while not receiving back can be a drain on emotions as well as finances. But Chany says this is because we often have the wrong attitude towards giving.

When we searched the basement we found that over Sukkos she had gotten in while the door must have been open and given birth to kittens. She sent us to buy cat food. When we returned with twelve cans of the same food she was upset- even a cat needs variety! A child will always be happy with a piece of candy. She uses a variety of approaches, from davening to humor to seeking inspiration.

I have many meaningful activities. I give shiurim, am involved in teaching, and have written a book as well. I often think of the things I can do because I have time available to me. This is not to minimize the pain of infertility. But make no mistake. As hard as it is, the key is to keep trying to rise above. The infertility issue often overshadows the underlying problem.

Make sure to take care of all your medical needs. The two children she and her husband adopted literally came to them. But the child you yearned for so deeply may come to you in the form of a ten year old who needs parents. But more than wanting to be a mother, I want my husband to be a father. I want to have a child to be mikadesh shem shamayim. When the doctors tell me their pessimistic views I try to ignore them. The journey is not an easy one.

The weather has been beautiful and the days have been filled with a sense of closeness and warmth. We have experienced a close bond with Hashem and now, unfortunately we are leaving that state and we may feel uncertain and anxious.

What will this long winter bring? Will we experience joy and happiness? Will we be able to maintain that closeness that we felt during the days of Sukkos? It is true that the winter brings chilly temperatures and we miss that intense spiritual warmth, but we have an opportunity to ignite a spark to help us through - the light of Chanukah!

In the very beginning of time the Al-mighty created light. This ohr was not the type of light we have today, rather it was a mystical light. After Adam sinned Hashem saw that the world would no longer be able to appreciate this light, so He hid it, and thus it is called the ohr haganuz.

We can certainly understand this concept but as we are curious creatures, we wonder — where did Hashem hide this beautiful spiritual light? Like any journey, sometimes we feel lost and as though it will never end — but we persevere and then perceive that extraordinary light. Our journey through the year is analogous to our journey through our own personal lives. The seasons of the year enter a dark and cold spell where we struggle to find light and warmth - but as long as we persist in our journey we will discover the warmth.

So too, our neshamos might feel detached from the varmkeit and lichtegkeit of Torah and Mitzvos. If we endure, though, we will find the warmth. If we would add up all the lights that are kindled on Chanukah we would discover that there are 36 in all. These 36 lights are reminiscent of the 36 hours that the ohr haganuz was present in this world. It is also evocative of the 36 hidden tzaddikim in this world. This may be alluded to in the name Kislev, the month in which Chanukah falls.

Kis is a pocket- a place where we hide something. Lamed vav is the number Just as there are 36 tzaddikim hidden inside the world, so too, veiled within this month is the ability to discover the hidden tzaddik concealed deep within each and every one of our neshamos. The meaning of this might be that even if the Yom Tov of Chanukah has passed us by we must not despair. In fact the gematria of Teves is , one more than the years in which the Beis Hamikdash existed, teaching us the aforementioned lesson.

Although we might be brooding in the ashes of destruction we must immediately try to begin anew to rekindle that light once more. One final thought. Interestingly, seventy-four is the number of the word Eid. The Ayin and dalet are the letters which are the bookends of the phrase Shema Yisroel These two letters are enlarged to let us know that we must bear witness to the fact the Hashem is One. How appropriate then is the number 74?

When our clarity and belief in both the Al-mighty and our own connection to Him is clouded, we must always know that the glowing lights of Chanukah are still radiating brilliantly. It might seem dark and hopeless, as if we are trapped in the middle of the tunnel. But hold on. Be strong. For the light at the end of the tunnel is right there inside your pocket!

Roitenberg D espite the humidity and oppressive heat, the long main road — Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak was overcrowded with throngs of men, women and children. Rooftops, bus stops, windows and balconies were packed with excited celebrants. Shopkeepers had closed their stores earlier than usual, young boys holding flags had been had been dismissed from Cheder early that evening and kollel men had interrupted their usual intense learning schedules to be part of this scene.

This took place seven years ago in the month of Elul. There was neither a Chuppa nor any torch lights as this was not the celebration of a hachnasos sefer torah. We were not dressed in Shabbos finery and obviously had not gathered to meet a Gadol Hador. What was it then that had prompted women and children to leave their homes at this usually hectic hour? Why had so many people either closed their businesses or left the Beis Hamedrash?

The excited masses of people had come out together to salute and cheer the heroes of this victory parade. And who exactly were the victorious heroes? The year was It had been a Shmittah year and the heroes were thousands of Shmittah observant farmers. Tractors and combine-harvesters driven by sun-tanned farmers as well as farmers on horse drawn wagons that were filled with scythes and other agriculture equipment all made their way down Rechov Chazon Ish.

These simple men had attained greatness and as we waved cheered and clapped to the music, they shook hands with the men and children. They smiled proudly to the crowds who were applauding their courage, belief and steadfastness. They had kept Shmittah meticulously day after day, week after week, month after month, letting their fields, vineyards and lands lie infertile and fallow. Tehillim ;20 The very same verse that describes angels describes Shmittah observers.

For they, with their constant unswerving faith, belief and trust, have reached the heights attained by angels. Any produce that grows during Shmittah must be used correctly and has special halachos as the fruits of the Shmittah year have special kedusha.

Couples who spend years in preparation and prayer and who are finally blessed, their fruits, their children have an extra kedusha. For those who are chosen by Hashem to remain childless they too can have fruits, spirituality, eternity and holiness just like the Chazon Ish. If the verse describing angels applies to Shmittah observant farmers because they endure days, weeks and months of challenge, then surely it can apply to us too who undergo and endure not merely weeks and months but even years of trial and challenge.

Before the procession began, these heroic farmers attended a dinner where they had been addressed and praised by Rabbanim and Gedolim. These same Torah leaders had instructed us to leave our homes, schools, Shuls, Yeshivos and workplaces in honor of these great angel-like farmers who had left their own fields for an entire year, relying solely on Hashem for their needs and livelihood.

While the smiling crowds cheered and as men danced around the farmers, I felt tears spring to my eyes. While I rejoiced with everyone, tears trickled down my cheeks. I found myself comparing their great challenge — Shmittah and their infertile land, with our own trials of infertility. Can I express such joy in the face of challenge? First and foremost I thought of the Chazon Ish, as we stood there on the road that is named after this great Tzaddik. He was a man who worked tirelessly with superhuman effort to reinstate Shmittah observance after years of neglect.

The Chazon Ish, a giant in Torah, who never merited to have children, a man who tasted the bitterness of infertility, spent his life encouraging farmers to leave their fertile farmland, trees and vineyards, allowing them to lie fallow. Torah umitzvos heim ikur toldoseihen shel tzadikim..

The Chazon Ish never had children but today years later we are still celebrating the fruits of his labor. These farmers, each and every one a success story — they are his children! Modern science has proven that leaving fields fallow for a while improves and restores the nutrients and minerals in the ground.

I know that Hashem Himself who has commanded that land must be left barren has also decreed for us to experience infertility. However, while we struggle with the pain of childlessness, at the very same time, just like fallow land improves, to too we must improve. We must maintain and develop an even greater belief and trust in Hashem. These farmers, some who never had a formal Jewish education, suddenly find themselves joining a Torah learning program and thereby making great strides in Yiddishkeit.

I have heard that some farmers proclaim, that in terms of spiritual growth, Shmittah is their most fruitful, productive and profitable year. During the Shmittah year, although farmers cannot fertilize, sow, or plant on their land, they do have fruit producing trees. At times they go out to their fields with their workers and incur expenses but no profits. They pick and package fruit that they then distribute at no cost.

There at the parade I saw their jubilant smiles and I knew how happily they had done this. I thought of our own tribulations, the medical expenses, the high cost of medications and treatments and unfortunately for some, no profits and no fruits as of yet.

I understand just why these farmers are compared to angels. Not only must we appreciate them, we must also try to learn from them. Farmers admit that it becomes so obvious to them that their sustenance comes from Hashem.
